What You Need to Know About Our New Coffee Cups

Rachel Sammons . February 3, 2020

CLOSE YOUR EYES, TAKE A SIP, AND FEEL THE DIFFERENCE.

That’s right. Palate Coffee Brewery has new cups. And these glazed goblets taste like ingenuity. That’s because they were hand-crafted by Matt Garrett. The DeLand-based artist shared with me his inspiration and his loyalty to coffee:

Me: What first got you into ceramics?

Matt Garrett: During my freshman year at Stetson University I decided to take a wheel throwing ceramics course to fulfill an elective. Long story short that one class changed my entire path of study.

M: Where do you get your inspiration from?

MG: I get inspiration from many different classic and contemporary artists with many different styles. If I had to pick one that has stuck with me from the beginning though it would have to be the traditional Japanese philosophy of Wabi-sabi.

M: What do you love about being a ceramics artist?

MG: Throwing on the wheel brings me into a calm and meditative state of mind. I have been an artist/designer most of my life, but always in the digital realm. Physically sculpting a piece of art from a block of clay as oppose to a computer screen is far more fulfilling, who knew?!

M: How did you get connected with Palate?

MG: I met Katrina last summer when I was setting up at the Sanford Indie Market. She was already familiar with my work as I had already been making mugs for Trilogy Coffee here in DeLand. So my goal is to have all the coffeeshops slowly discover me by word-of-mouth from other coffee shops, lol.

M: What is your favorite coffee drink?

MG: Always the latté, with cane sugar and cinnamon.

M: Where can art enthusiasts find you?

MG: At the moment I set up locally at area events, mostly here in DeLand and Sanford. I can be found weekly at the Artisan Alley Market on Friday nights.

EVERYONE COME TO PALATE TO TRY AND BUY THESE GORGEOUS MUGS!
